Pier One Imports Jute Rug Review

Wondering if you should purchase a jute rug? Specifically one from Pier One Imports? Well, let me tell you a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you how I came to love jute rugs and why you should care.

If you prefer to skip story time then scroll to the heading PIER ONE IMPORTS’ JUTE RUG REVIEW. If you’ve got some extra time on your hands then…

I’ve recently lived through what can only be described as a rug decision-making hurricane. I’ve hit the purchase button in error twice now. Third times a charm?

Jute Rug # 1:  The Hand-woven Black Jute Rug for $265 from Overstock.com. You might be saying to yourself right now, “My goodness, why on earth would someone buy a black jute rug? That’s lunacy.” And I would say to you my friend, you are correct. Hindsight is 20/20. After accepting defeat, I ate the shipping costs and sent that bad boy packing. Jute rug fail #1.

Pics or it didn’t happen…

Jute Rug # 2: Amazon’s Iron Gate Hand Spun Jute Area Rug. Weighing in at 538 reviews, 4 and a half stars and $150, I rolled the dice and bet on this guy. Unfortunately, it was surprisingly too big for the space. How often does that happen? It was also a little rough on the toesies. Fortunately, my sister was having her very own jute rug crisis as well–hers was too small.

It ended up being a win win situation. Her rug was too small, mine was too big. Both were jute. So we did a little swapsees. Fortunately for me (bummer for her), her jute rug from Pier One Imports was way softer than my Amazon jute rug.

In the pictures below you can’t really tell the difference between the Amazon and Pier One rugs just by looking. If only you could walk on your computer screen and FEEL the difference. It’s not insignificant.

I took one step onto my now third jute rug and let me tell you, it was glorious. Two big toes up.

Pros To A Jute Rug

I get it, I get it. It is VERY tempting to purchase a rug that looks identical to another for 1/4 of the price. So tempting in fact that I did it! But you might end up living a life of regret. Turns out, not all jute rugs are created equal. I learned that the hard way. While I tend to err on the thrifty side, it is so worth it to spend a few extra Benjamins on a softer jute rug than to have your poor little toesies begging for mercy every time you walk on it.

Texture and Warmth

Rugs change the feel of a room in an instant. Sometimes when a room feels boring I think maybe it needs some color or pattern. However, when I add one of those two things I often feel overstimulated. I never used to think of texture as a substitute for color or pattern. But it’s great. A textured, neutral rug isn’t overly intense and doesn’t limit your options for future decorating ideas and changes. If you’re like me and change your mind often on decor and color scheme, maybe a jute rug is the right choice for you.

Say you LOVE pattern and color. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Well, you could STILL buy a large, neutral jute rug and then layer it with a smaller, more colorful rug. Smaller rugs are cheaper. This would allow you to more easily and readily forgive yourself for making a choice you may grow tired of in a few years. It also allows you to add some personality to your space without feeling overwhelmed.

Dirt disguiser

Jutes hide the mess.

While the Pier One Imports rug is more expensive than Overstock, Amazon and other similar competitors, the extra softness and quality, in my opinion, is worth it.  Jute is like the little black dress of rugs. Everyone needs one that fits just right.

Good luck with all your rug choices.
